Learn more about AFCU's work in the community
Since 1979, AFCU has been a fixture in Upstate New York for our support of community organizations, cooperatives, non-profits, and more. As a non-profit cooperative itself, AFCU understands how critical support is when trying to make positive change in our community.
AFCU believes strongly in neighbors supporting neighbors. Through our Staff Volunteer Program, our employees are offered 3 paid hours per month where they can volunteer at a non-profit of their choosing, and be paid by AFCU for their time doing so. This program is just one example of how we encourage our employees to support our shared community.
AFCU is proud to sponsor local events, organizations, initiatives, and more that align with our values.

Since 2017, AFCU has been a sponsor of The Sophie Fund's annual Cupcake Baking Contest, a creative amateur baking contest to raise funds for mental health awareness and services in Tompkins County. As a non-profit, The Sophie Fund "supports programs and projects; raises awareness and fights the stigma around mental illness and treatment; advances a “zero suicide” ethos in the community; and serves as a community advocate for young people struggling with mental illness."
AFCU is proud to be the sole financial institution to sponsor The Sophie Fund's Cupcake Baking Contest each year. Learn more about the annual contest and The Sophie Fund here.

For many years, AFCU has sponsored and assembled a team of women staff members who participate in the Habitat for Humanity Women Build. The Women Build brings together women in our region for an empowering day to practice their construction skills, best techniques for using tools, and more. The teams of women work together to create the frames of a house that will become home to a first-time homeowner in our region.
Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties works with first-time homeowners to help them improve upon or build a new home that is affordable. You can learn more about Habitat for Humanity and the Women Build here.

Starting in 2017, AFCU was proud to partner with the Ithaca Farmers Market to support a new initiative supporting youth entrepreneurs. During the Ithaca Farmers Market's Thursday Night Markets, AFCU set up a booth to give away swag and connect with our community! And, pairing together AFCU's commitment to our local businesses and youth education, we sponsored the Youth Entrepreneurship Market, which was held the last Thursday of each month. During the Youth Entrepreneurship Market, youth vendors were able to gain valuable experience selling their wares to the public.
