TAX PROGRAM: COVID-19 Update - May 17, 2021

Thank you for supporting AFCU’s Free Tax Preparation Program!

The Free Tax Prep Program is closed for this year, as of May 17, 2021.

We are no longer able to accept new tax clients for this year.

Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.

If you have a special circumstance, see below for instructions from tax season 2020:

Did you earn less in 2020 than in 2019? (**Unemployment Insurance does not count as earnings**)
You could qualify for a larger tax refund if you use your 2019 earnings! This year, you can choose to use either your 2019 or 2020 income and claim the biggest refund. For many, choosing 2019 income will lead to a bigger refund. Have your 2019 tax return available when you do your taxes this year.

Did you get Unemployment Insurance during 2020?
If so, you will need to get a tax form called a 1099-G from the New York State Department of Labor website (the same place you enrolled for and certified your weekly claims). Your preparer will need this document if you received unemployment insurance during 2020. Click below and follow the directions to download your 1099-G form.

Also due to COVID, our procedure will be different this tax season. We are still here to help and we offer the following options for you:

If your return is simple and you are comfortable filing on your own, please email [email protected] and we can set you up with our online self-assistance software. You can do the entire return, both federal and state, on your own via the portal. If you run into problems, we can help! Just email your questions to [email protected].

Self Employed? You may find these forms useful before you work with the software, but they are not required:

            1. Schedule C Worksheet

            2. Schedule C Supplement

You can do the entire return, both federal and state, on your own via the portal. However, in the cases of complex returns, we will be unable to help with questions beyond the scope of our usual services.

            2. Schedule C Supplement

If you would like us to prepare your return for you, we will be offering a completely virtual VITA option. This option requires an email address and a cell phone to take pictures of your documents. Our secure online portal will collect all of your information and documentation for us to file your return. We will contact you via phone, text, or email to verify your information, then have you review and sign your return electronically before we file for you.

Self Employed? Please download the following documents:

            1. Schedule C Worksheet

            2. Schedule C Supplement

If you would like us to prepare your return for you but can’t use the virtual option, we will have limited intake only appointments. During these appointments, we will help you fill out the paperwork, answer any questions, and copy your documents. Then, one of our volunteers will prepare your return remotely. For this option, call 2-1-1 (or 1-877-211-8667) starting January 19th to make an appointment.

**Note: We will need to know the amount of the Economic Impact Payments (the stimulus checks or deposits) you received, both earlier in 2020 and then again in December or January of 2021. Check your banking accounts if you don’t remember the amounts. This is NOT taxable income, and it will only be used to make sure you receive what you are entitled to. Write the total amount on Intake Sheet 1, page 2, part V, after Question 10.

If you have access to a printer, to save time and promote social distancing, you can print and complete the following documents ahead of your appointment time:

            1. Intake Sheet 1

            2. Intake Sheet 2

            3. Consent Form

            4. Self Employed? Please download the following documents:

              1. Schedule C Worksheet

              2. Schedule C Supplement
