Alternatives Federal Credit Union released the results of its biennial Living Wage Study Friday, August 18 at a news conference at The Space at GreenStar, 700 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca, NY.

Karl Graham, Director of Community Relations and Development at Alternatives announced the updated figures that represent a Living Wage for the Tompkins County area. Karl was joined by a panel of speakers including:
  • Eric Levine, Acting CEO and General Counsel, Alternatives Federal Credit Union
  • Megan Ward;, A Living Wage employee, Alternatives Federal Credit Union
  • Pete Meyers, Coordinator and one of the founders of the Tompkins County Workers’ Center. The Workers’ Center certifies Living Wage employers
  • Rob Brown, Office Manager/Development Associate, Tompkins County Workers’ Center
  • Deb Dietrich, ED of OAR (a small not for profit that works with formerly incarcerated people) a Certified Living Wage Employer
Alternatives released the first Living Wage Study in 1994 and has updated the study biennially. The study was originally done for internal use by Alternatives, but its release to the public was encouraged by Alternatives’ Board of Directors. It has stimulated important discussion about the meaning of earning a Living Wage and provided a benchmark for others in the county to use.

The Finger Lakes ReUse Center was awarded The Jeff Furman Award for Social Responsibility in Business at Alternatives’ 2012 annual meeting, with Executive Director Diane Cohen accepting the award. Cohen expressed her thanks: “We will hang the award prominently and proudly in our Reuse Center, and as we grow, we will continue to use this as a beacon, to continue our efforts to maximize our capacity to provide opportunities and relieve hardship. We know we are in solidarity with Alternatives on these issues. We're a young organization with a mission to enhance community, economy, and environment through reuse, and a priority to serve our community well. Receiving this award has been an honor and an affirmation.”
