Bill Myers, our founding CEO, retired from Alternatives Federal Credit Union in 2007. Anyone who worked with Bill cannot help but be impressed with Bill's keen sense of purpose and sharp intellect on how to convert purpose into action. He worked tirelessly to make Alternatives' mission "to build wealth in the community" a reality. And then, using Alternatives as his experimental station, he shares successes with the world. Now it's our turn to thank him for all he's done for Alternatives, for the community, for the credit union movement, for community development, and beyond.

 Overview

The Bill Myers Internship was created to honor his commitment to teenagers as future leaders for financial education, economic justice, and community development. High school juniors or seniors have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at Alternatives, a financial institution dedicated to building wealth for underserved people and communities.

Program structure

Interns will receive minimum wage throughout the 2015-16 school year and receive a stipend up to $2,000. The first half of the internship will provide opportunities in various departments to learn about credit union programs and services. The second half of the internship will be organized around a specific financial education project. Topics include (but are not limited to) microenterprise, youth auto loans, debit and credit education, programs for children from low-income families, etc.

Qualifications

High school juniors and seniors who sign up with Youth Employment Services (YES) are eligible to apply. Since the credit union deals with highly sensitive and personal information, the intern must be honest, detail-oriented, and able to uphold confidentiality. Successful applicants will be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work independently.

Application procedure

Applicants must submit a letter describing their motivation to work in community service and why they want to work at Alternatives. Submit the letter along with two letters of recommendation to Alternatives Federal Credit Union. We will contact finalists for an interview.
